welcome to the confit pathways digital mentoring application

We welcome you to watch the video below before you start

CONFIT Pathways is all about fitness, community, mindset and importantly about creating second chances and opportunities for individuals with lived prison experience to give back to their communities.

We now have a responsibility to scale our operations to support as many young people as we can. A major blocker for our growth is the administrative burden cast upon the mentors we are desperate to recruit.

Simple things like access to Working with Children applications means we don’t have a pool of people with lived experience to service regional centres desperate to stay connected with the program.

This initiative will develop an accessible digital experience to mentor, train, connect and inspire anyone who wants to complete or stay connected to the CONFIT Pathway program/ community and excite the nation by providing people with a second chance.

The end goal is an App to connect people who are exiting youth justice centres and prisons with community, training and employment pathways.

Budget Details

Find estimates in details for each area below. Please reach out with more questions where required.

Podcast / Storytelling

This budget supports a dedicated video and podcast producer for part of the project. This role ensures that the story and journey to supporting thousands of young people around Australia is captured in an engaging way. This story will create a case study for future organisations wanting to create similar impact and inspire many more.

App pilot and development

This part develops the framework to building an App based upon the feedback and experience of people going through the program. This area will build the framework to understand the costs and maintenance required to build an App to grow as big as the need is from acros the Confit Pathways community.

Lived experience consultation

Confit Pathways is engaged with a lived experience consultation expert. This ensures that we have the best support available to work with people that are working through reintegration experiences and Confit Pathways staff have someone they can ask questions to for support.

Digital development

This part of the project will be supported by A Curious Tractor. The budget supports a dedicated project manager one day per week as a mentoring and consulting position and well as budget for additional support in the areas of communication, administration and digital design.

Digital Intern

This important part of the project ensures that reimbursement is available for people with lived experience to add value and learn important skills in the areas of communication and digital design. Members of the Confit Pathways team will have the chance to apply for short internships to work with A Curious Tractor in development and communications.

Year one will see us build a new website (with a partner that supports people returning from prison), support a part time digital intern from the Confit team to have a paid role as part of the build, work with a lived experience expert for engagement and create a story that supports us to properly show others how this was achieved.

We will work with A Curious Tractor to project manage and employ their strong history in building technology products and organisations built on connections and scale.

The end result is both a system of support and a roadmap over the next 3 years that will achieve National coverage and scale. Our goals is impact in a way that works for our organisational growth and connection with people returning from youth justice centres and prisons.

We see the following year as a pilot to then come back to The Snow Foundation in 9 months time with a review and opportunity to engage with recurrent funding over a 3 year period. If you are interested in a 3 year recurrent funding model from this year we are interested in coming back to you with the modelling.

Outcomes

Community

Confit can help a certain amount of people face to face but that is dependent on mentors all over Australia that can regularly check-in. An App connects Mentors with participants, people can be available 24/7, information can be shared instantly and there is always a place to come back to in times of need.

Inspiration

By providing a community platform Confit can continue to inspire the young people through fitness videos, motivational talks and quotes from the team and real stories.

Mentoring

We don’t have enough mentors to scale at a fast pace to cover regional and interstate and there are a number of blockers for growth in this area. Digital mentors provide everyone with a mentor at all times and creates a circle of mentors to support and be there in times of need.

In 2022 Confit Pathways delivered programs in 5 of the 6 youth justice centres across NSW reaching over 160 incarcerated young people and have already helped 70 young people in 2023.The development of a website and App has the scope to support 195 young people in NSW re-entering community after completing or partially completing the Confit pathways program and and also adults (numbers TBA) as we have an agreement to start running programs in three different Correctional Centres across NSW in 2023/24 as well as directly building the capacity/remunerate the Confit support team.

Who else will benefit, and in what way?
How will you know whether this initiative was successful, and how will you measure this?
What are the risks that might prevent you from achieving the intended outcomes, and what are you doing to mitigate them?

Collaboration and Consultation

We are currently engaging with lived experience engagement consultants to build the best frameworks for working with our cohort. This will include workshops for staff to best understand engagement and collaboration with people returning from prison.

We work closely with case managers in the centres where we deliver programs who then refers this platform to our potential users.

We also work closely with case workers in the children's court who refer our platform as well.

We will continue to work with University across Australia like Griffiths, ANU and UNSW who have researchers and programs in similar areas of focus.

We will work with experts in the field of technology development and program management.

We will specifically employ the support of business with specifications in the area of website development, application development and production.

Joe Kwon highlights the opportunities and outcomes below

Leadership and management

CONFIT PATHWAYS & CONFIT

Joe Kwon

At the age of 21 Joe was sentenced to 13 years in prison for directing a criminal enterprise. During his time in prison, he was fortunate enough to meet his first ever positive mentor who challenged my perceptions and attitudinal outlook on life. He not only taught him about business and the value of education, but most importantly he taught him about self-worth from a prison cell. From directing a criminal enterprise, today Joe is  the Founder and CEO of a social enterprise (Confit) and a NFP (Confit Pathways) where he teaches that sense of self worth to inmates to thrive in society. Joe’s  mission is to help reduce recidivism in Australia and create employment and education opportunities for individuals coming out of custody by breaking down societies preconceived notions of criminal stereotypes and provide positive community support through mentors with lived prison experience. Joe has been working with adult inmates coming out of prison and also incarcerated young people, in and out of detention to build a pro social community through fitness.

A CURIOUS TRACTOR & CON-NECTED

Benjamin Knight

Ben kicked off his work in prisons as a backpacker in Bolivia and was fascinated by the resiliency of the prisoners. The system had forced them into this situation but they still get up to work everyday and create moments of joy and kindness. Moving back to Australia he had the chance to work in the Gulf of Queensland running alcohol and drug and family violence programs. He never could have imagined the profound impact this 3 or so years had on his life. Listening and learning from the communities of Mornington Island, Doomadgee and Normanton stripped this idea of people who were 'bad'  changed this into people that needed a chance to grow. He then got to work within the reintegration space and facilitation of criminogenic programs. The thing that struck him was the way the system kept people guessing as to what was important, were they making themselves better or were they playing a game, a game where the system had already chosen the winner. He took a few years break from Justice and worked with advocacy for kids in care, a good stint running the brand at Orange Sky and now finds himself at AIME working to centre intelligence from outside the margins. Now it is his time to return to the criminal justice system and offer a solution for people used to doing what they are told to change to doing what is right, what is best for them and their identity.

A CURIOUS TRACTOR & ORANGE SKY

Nicholas Marchesi

Awarded Young Australian of the Year in 2016 and a 2020 Order of Australia medal, Nic has a passion and commitment to supporting people doing it tough. Nic has been instrumental in the significant growth of Orange Sky and is passionate about leading Orange Sky to deliver on its five year strategy of supporting 40,000 friends by 2025.Nic pioneered the integration of technology into Orange Sky’s operations and helped lead the development of the Orange Sky Portal and App. This in-house built technology provides Orange Sky with meaningful insights on how the organisation is performing and allows staff to make more informed decisions and was the foundation for the Volaby project for which Google awarded Orange Sky $1 million dollars to commercialise the software.
